Behind the Veil: NC Landlords, LLCs, and the Disclosure Gap

An Investigative Series Uncovering Hidden Landlords, Exploited Loopholes, and the Cost of Secrecy

GREENSBORO, N.C. — September 23, 2025— The Greensboro Chronicle announces on October 1, 2025, the launch of a groundbreaking investigative series, Behind the Veil: NC Landlords, LLCs, and the Disclosure Gap. This multi-part exposé takes readers into the concealed world of North Carolina’s rental housing market, where corporate shells, management companies, and legal maneuvering leave tenants in the dark about who truly controls their homes.

For too long, tenants across the state have asked simple questions with no clear answers: Who is my landlord? Where is my security deposit? Who is accountable when my rights are violated? This series reveals how the promises of transparency in law are undermined by deliberate nondisclosure, leaving communities vulnerable to abuse and retaliation.

“Behind the Veil” will peel back these hidden layers, installment by installment—spotlighting tenants’ lived experiences, exposing systemic failures, and challenging the legal loopholes that allow secrecy to thrive. What emerges is not only a story about landlords and tenants, but a question of whether we, as a society, will honor fairness, accountability, and justice—or allow power to grind down those who seek it.
